BOLD AND BREASTLESS

February 11th is just another day for most, but it is a day of confirmation for Shondia McFadden-Sabari.  On this date in 2011, God’s promise unfolded for Shondia, she was officially cancer free.  Shondia’s story is one filled with both trials and triumph but despite everything, you can witness God’s favor as you travel through her life.  I remember strolling down my Facebook timeline a few weeks ago and seeing a post by Shondia.  In the post she was reaching out to a friend who was battling cancer but more than that, battling doubt and depression. She offered words of encouragement along with a photo that made my proud to know such a bold, fierce and fearless woman.  The photo was of herself topless and breastless.  She displayed her scars to promote the courage and faith in God that she had in another women.  Why because she is her sister’s keeper.

Shondia McFadden-Sabari lives in Atlanta, with her husband and their two children. Shondia is the Executive Director of BOLDANDBREASTLESS, Inc. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, the late Eva and Levan McFadden in Timmonsville, South Carolina. Shondia has traveled all over the world with her husband, who is a Major, in the Army. Shondia earned a bachelor’s of science degree in 1997, in Child and Family Development, from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. She earned a masters degree in 1998, in Human Resources Development, from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. A former elementary school teacher, Shondia is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Shondia is the Georgia State Coordinator, for the Delta Sigma Theta/American Cancer Society partnership. She’s a board member, of the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. Shondia is a LIFE member, of the National Council of Negro Women. A documentary of Shondia’s journey premiered at the Black Women’s Agenda Luncheon, at the 2011 Congressional Black Caucus. GE sponsored Shondia for their 2011 War on Cancer Campaign. Shondia was the Keynote Speaker, at the 2012 James E. Clyburn Research Scholarship Foundation’s, annual luncheon. Additionally, Shondia spoke at the 2012 sixth annual, National Conference on Health Disparities. Essence.com, Yahoo News, BET.com, and the Huffington Post have done articles on Shondia. She spoke at the Atlanta Braves, 2013 Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Shondia also spoke at the Breast Party Ever, a national event sponsored by BET and Planned Parenthood. Shondia was one of five breast cancer survivors, honored by the Atlanta Falcons at their 2013, Breast Cancer Awareness game, televised on ESPN. FOX 5 Atlanta has featured Shondia in several news segments. Shondia loves cooking for her husband and children, spending time with senior citizens, and attending networking events. She enjoys traveling and sharing her amazing story with others. Her motto is, “I scared the hell out of cancer, so it took my breasts and left!”

On December 23, 2010, shortly after her husband returned home from his second deployment, Shondia was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Shondia say she was blessed despite the diagnoses because, “He allowed my husband to make it back home safely, so that he could be with me when I got the news and started on my journey!”   No lumps, no discomfort, no discharge, nothing to make her think she had breast cancer. Shondia says, “It was like a still small voice that said I needed to get a mammogram. I wasn’t hearing strange voices and I didn’t see any shadows! It was the Holy Spirit that led me to get that mammogram.”  The very next day, Shondia went to have a mammogram and almost two weeks later she was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts! In her right breast, stage 0. She also had two different types of cancer in her right breast, DCIS and LCIS. In her left breast, DCIS. However, there was an area that was a stage 0 and another area that was a stage 1A, that was near a blood vessel!  February 11, 2011, Shondia underwent a double mastectomy.  She later made the bold decision not to have reconstructive surgery and doesn’t wear breast forms. Diagnosed at the age of 36, is truly a survivor and proof that early detection can and can save your life.  She say, “ I’m thankful that I’m confident and bold enough to show other women, that if they get a Mastectomy, it’s okay to have reconstructive surgery or wear prosthesis. However, it’s okay to be breastless too!”   Life is all that really matters

“I’m so thankful, God allowed me to survive breast cancer! I’m eager, to share my testimony with the world! Early detection is so important! I was scared; when I was told I had breast cancer! But, I never questioned GOD, I was never depressed or angry and I never will be! I’m just so thankful; I passed the test that allowed me to have this amazing testimony. I’m on a mission, to inspire people that have been affected by cancer. One thing is for sure; my breast cancer experience didn’t affect my self-esteem! Sometimes, I look at pictures of myself when I had breasts and jokingly I say to those twins, what did I do? You two tried to kill me and I took good care of both of you, for 36 years! Well, I don’t even miss them and my husband is still happy and in love with me! I think maybe they’re somewhere in a lab, being studied! Perhaps, floating in a river! Either way, they’re gone or the cancer is gone! I’m so thankful, that I didn’t have to do chemotherapy or radiation. Also, my margins are clear and so is my mind! Additionally, my onco type dx score was a 7. In the bible, 7 mean completion! Therefore, I will thank God every day, for healing my body and for allowing me to be completely healthy and completely cancer free!”

From Shondia’s experience with cancer, she gave birth to her organization BOLDANDBREASTLESS, Inc.  a non-profit organization formed to educate, inspire, and motivate women, children, and men that have been affected by breast cancer. The organization  raises and use funds to increase awareness, assist cancer patients, cancer survivors and co-survivors, as well as motivate the general public, to take an active role in participating and partnering with cancer and health institutions and other advocates to help find a cure for cancer.  Some of Shondia’s most recognized work is more a labor of love for her.  She has this amazing love for others and a dedication to encourage, empower and educate as many people as she can no matter what their situation is.  Proof of this is the relationship that she has formed with Jakorey Moore, a sweet little boy living with brain cancer.  Because of her relationship Jakorey he has touched the hearts and received the prayers of many.

Shondia is such an inspiration to many women including myself.  She never hesitates to share her testimony and give unselfishly to others.  She could very well have gone through this journey quietly and returned to normal life, but she didn't because she knew that she had work to do.  When I thought about this, it reminded me of a statement that I made to Jakorey’s mom.  Now I know that it holds true for many of us if not all.  “God brings us to situation not for us but many times for others,” this is certainly true for Shondia because her message continues to save live, encourage others and empower them to live beyond their situation.   Shondia McFadden-Sabari; Passionate (about life), Happy (with who she is), Appreciative (of God for his blessings) and True (to herself and others……. P.H.A.T GIRL FRESH!!!!!

Melt Cosmetics Ultra Matte

I know that all of my friends and followers know that I am a MAC Girl, especially when it comes to lipstick.  Yes, I am obsessed with lipsticks period and I live for a matte lippie.  I have tried many but I have to say, MAC is my absolute favorite.  However, I have to tell you that I have definitely found a new love.  I receive an order from Melt Cosmetics this week and I must admit I was pleased.  I have been stalking their website for months on end because many of the more popular color were continuously sold out.  Luckily a tip from another lipstick lover enabled me to finally get my order placed.

Because I know the qualities of good lipstick and what I don’t like, I am very particular when it comes to ordering from new companies.  I have watched several reviews on Melt Cosmetics and their ultra matte lippies all which were favorable for the most part with the exception of those individuals that just don’t like matte lippies.  Even with all of the information that I had, I still decided to be safe and order one.  I ordered DGAF because I love the color and I was confident that it would look FAB on me, and it did.  Not to mention the texture is great and there is no need to reapply.  The thing I like most, which is different from MAC’s matte/retro matte, is that it has a little moisture.

I can’t say enough how much I love this lippie and the way it looked on me. In terms of lipsticks, this is one of the best, right up there with MAC.   Hell while I am working on the blog, I went over to the site and ordered “Blow.”  That is $19.00 I don’t mind spending, at all!! So yes, I am officially a Melt Girl too!!!!  #PHATGIRLFRESH #LIPSTICKMAFIA #MELTDGAF

Never Give Up

When I began my journey with Bigmama's Clothing/P.H.A T. Girl Fresh very few people believed and even fewer supported. My of my besties Vanessa Mott, encouraged me and gave me ideas.  My homeboy Robert Freeman gave me all the information I needed to start a business.   My college buddy Che brought the first P.H.A.T. Girl Fresh shirt and motivated me. I approached several people with my ideas in pursuit of a partnership, no one was interested.  I was discouraged, I felt defeated and I wanted to give up.  However, I kept going and believed in what God have shown me more than I focused on the my fear and naysayers.

Things did not happen over night but they happened.  Slowly He continues to show me that He is GREATER. No matter what the situation, He has the final say. Even now as I prepare for greater, he is still showing up and showing out.

The moral of the story is, never give up on your dreams. Never allow someone else's blindness effect your beautiful picture. Things may not happen in your time but they will happen in God's time.  Don't allow fear to cripple you as it has the naysayers.  #beencouraged #phatgirlfresh #blackgirlsrock #allgirlsrock #curvygirlsrock #twoyearslater #dreams #stayfocused

FRO THE RECORD

“Patience, health before length and do what works for you”, says Aevin
Dugas.  Many people might ask the question who is Aevin Dugas; the answer is, the beautiful woman who holds the world record for the largest afro.  This is a title that Aevin has held since 2011 after Guinness World Record measured her afro at an amazing 4 ft. 4in.  It was by chance that Aevin acquired this title and made history as the first person to ever do so. Aevin became the record holder after one of her sister’s Facebook friends suggested she enter the contest in 2010.  Four years later, rest is literally history.

Today being natural is popular; it wasn’t 14 years ago when Aevin made the conscious decision to transition her hair back to its natural state.  With the help of her friend; who made sure she kept fresh cornrows, her journey began.  Aevin admits that it did take her a while to become comfortable with her hair; now that she has, she said she “never even considers” creamy crack. Her thoughts are, “why relaxer your hair when you can get the same effects with natural hair?”  “Relaxed hair restricted me but being natural give me a whole lot of options.”  Aevin is so pleased with her kinky hair that she rarely even blows it out and almost never straightens it.  I thought that maybe that was because of the time it takes to accomplish a silk out.  However, she says that she can wash/ condition (35 minutes), dry (45 minutes) and press (30 minutes) her hair in less than 2 hours.  Now that really shocked me!!  The reason that Aevin shy’s away from blow drying and pressing is the simple reality, heat causes damage to hair.  She says that normally after her weekly wash, she braids her hair and allows it to air dry. During the course of the week Aevin executes a variety of style including twists that take 2 hours to install.

In talking to Aevin I learned that she is not at all a product obsessed natural diva that has to use or try every product and technique that bloggers and vloggers suggest.  Maybe that is because many of the techniques that we are just becoming familiar with, she mastered long ago.  Aevin said when she made the transition; “Lusters Pink Oil Moisturizer” was her best friend.  Even now she says that she uses a variety of products that “aren’t regularly used by African American women like Suave shampoo.”  Another shocker because I was told that regular shampoo was natural hair’s worst enemy.  She does admit that over time she has incorporated hair butters for sealing and oils (grapeseed, almond and avocado) for moisture into her hair care routine.

My conversation with this Louisiana native left me enlightened by her knowledge and inspired by her dedication.  Because I spend so much time obsessing over the do’s and don’ts of natural hair.  Now I know that all of that isn’t necessary and I need to do what makes my hair happy.  She also educated me on some things about my daughter’s hair, like the fact that children’s hair change until puberty.   With all of that hair, years of experience and knowledge, you would think that she would be the face of some brand but she is not.  She hasn’t been presented with an offer that she felt was right for her.  Nevertheless, she is committed to informing other woman about the benefits of embracing their natural hair.  She may be small in size but she is in a sense the godmother of a big movement.   Aevin Dugas, a petite woman with hair that stretches half her height; Passion, Happy, Appreciative & True……P.H.A.T. A MARRIAGE MADE IN FASHION HEAVEN

Jeremy Scott and Moschino go together like milk and cereal, which has been prove by his first collection as creative director for the young and hip Italian brand. Both Jeremy and Moschino are notorious for their cheekiness with a double order of loud.

The pre-fall 2014 collection is a success. Iconic leather pieces were transformed into bags, letterman jackets were extended to dresses, and where a logo could go, it did go. The line is HAUTE SH#T and I can only imagine what the entire line is going to look like.  #PHATGIRLFRESH

WELCOME TO HONEYSUCKLE HILL

I received a call from one of my customers on New Year’s Eve asking if I had any knowledge of a new plus size boutique in town (Albany, Georgia), my answer was “nope.”  She and I both were thinking the same thing, surely if there was a new plus size boutique in town I would know.  Wrong!!!!!  Yes, Albany does have a new plus size boutique and its name is Honeysuckle Hill.

After speaking with the owner Amanda Bennett, I decided to take a trip to Honeysuckle Hill.  I must admit, I was very pleased.  The decor was amazing and so were the clothes.  I really applaud Amanda for stepping out of the box because honestly most plus size boutiques have the same inventory.  I tried on three pieces, which were pretty true to size, which is rare with plus size clothing you find in most boutiques.

Overall I give Honeysuckle Hill an A+!!! The clothing, the atmosphere and the owner were all grade A.  For all of you curvy divas in and around Albany, Georgia, who dare to be different and want to add some class to your curves; check out Honeysuckle Hill 2345 Dawson Road suite B.  Like Honeysuckle Hill on Facebook by clicking the following link  www.facebook.com/honeysucklehillboutique  #PHATGIRLFRESH

THE SANTIAGO WAY

"Genuine relationships, over monetary gain, is what I consider to be TRUE success.”  The words of an amazing woman who I admire more and more every day, Melinda Santiago.  I met Melinda a little less than a year ago while preparing for a fashion show that her artist Michael Keith (of 112) was putting together.  It didn’t take long for her to gain my respect both professionally and personally.  Everyone knows that I am all about girl power.  It does my heart good to see my sisters doing big things, living their best lives and helping others.  All of the things that I stated are the things that Melinda’s entire life is centered around, which is why she is truly a success.  To continue reading, click the link http://www.phatgirlfresh.com/#!fresh-life/cute

SPOKEN CURVES!!

Be it songs or poetry, vocal art moves me in a major way.  I can give countless accounts of hearing songs in church that moved me to tears, even when the word of the pastor didn't.  I just love the emotion and expression that comes with singing and spoken word.  That is why, I can honestly say that I am already a huge fan of the certified Phat Girl; Grande.  I recently met her in Columbus at the Rock and Roses hair and fashion show.  Before I had the chance to witness her gifts, I was pulled in by her amazing personality.  However, when she took the stage; I was just like “those wolves”, I cried “GRANDE’!” To continue reading this article, pictures and video click the link http://www.phatgirlfresh.com/#!fresh-life/cute

Its official, Barneys launched its "A New York Holiday" collection with Jay Z. Never mind the discrimination suit, that didn’t stop this luxury retailer and your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper collabo from happening.  While Barneys is accusing the NYPD for its racial profiling woes and Jay Z is attempting to redirect focus (and money) to his Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation, the whole world now has the opportunity to partake in all the hoopla by purchasing ridiculously priced items that no one in their right mind actually would purchase.  Anyone in need of cotton t-shirt with a few patches of leather for $995, should call me…….. I can hook you up!!!! Or maybe you've just been dying to get your nuts into a pair of leather boxing shorts, embroidered with gold stars for a cool $2,590. HAUTECORE LIPSTICK

It is no secret that I am a M.A.C girl, I love their lippies especially the mattes.  I am extremely excited about the black Friday release of Hautecore lipstick.  I have been rocking the black lippies for a while, so for M.A.C to now introduce a black lippie that is a matte too……. I GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!  I am not sure the pro discount will apply to the lippie but either was I will be engulfed in the madness of trying to order mine.  It will be available online at 12 midnight on black Friday.  For all of you fellow M.A.C girls, you already know that it will be a fight to get it.  However, keep clam…. CAKE OR FAKE?

Reality star Deelishis has become notoriously knew for her amazing curves and the fact that she actually kissed Flava Flav(throwing up in my mouth).  Although it is no secret that she is caked up, lately she has been receiving a lot of criticism.  Many of her followers on IG are saying that the bootilicious beauty has been photo shopping her pictures.  Honestly, until I started reading the comments, I never even thought for a second that she would be doing such a thing.  I guess she finally got tired of her assets being questioned, so she posted a video that should silence the haters.  #PHATGIRLFRESH

ROCK N ROSESE HAIR AND FASHION SHOW

Sherrie Walters-Aaron and the Cover Me Gorgeous team hosted a hair and fashion show in Columbus Georgia on Sunday, November 17, 2013.  I must admit, I was not sure what to expect because I have attended quit a few shows and some of them were garbage.  Maybe garbage is too harsh of a word but it is exactly what I mean.  LOL!!!!!!

When I arrived at the venue, the setup was great!!!  Things looked very nice and classy.  The V.I.P area was actually a nice exclusive setup with labeled tables and gift bags.  The runway was long and elevated so that the general admission audience was able to enjoy the show as well.  The vendors were aligned so that as you entered you had to pass them which is extremely important.  Another plus was that the show actually started on time, which is very rare.

Although I think that the host (rapper Rasheeda) and her co host could have done a better job of keeping the momentum going, the D.J was the bomb.com.  I don’t know if he was given a playlist but he kept the energy high.   Whoever was in charge of the show’s order did a good job of spacing things so that the experience was enjoyable.  The fashions were okay, but I must admit I expected a little more from Columbus.  What I loved most was the performance by songbird Tocarra and the Cover Me Gorgeous Curves segment.  Before the scene was introduced, poet Grande blessed the crowd with a poem that celebrated the beauty of PHAT GIRLS.  I LOVED IT!!!!!  This is something I have been trying to incorporate into a show for the longest time.  From the time Grande walked off the stage the energy was high and I was pleased to see one of the Faces of Fresh, Erica Elise WERKING!!!!

During her closing remarks, I recall Sherrie saying that this was her first event.  That was a surprise to me because she did something that a lot of fashion show vets can’t do.  She put on a successful show without incident and it was standing room only.  She also announced that she will be having another event in April.  I am excited because I think that I am going to inquire about having PHAT GIRL FRESH be a part of the event.  HATS OFF TO SHERRIE WALTERS-AARON, YOU ROCKED!!!!!  TO VIEW MORE PHOTOS FROM THE EVENT CLICK THE LINK BELOW

Richard Roundtree

“Shaft” star Richard Roundtree was shocked when he was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993. For years after his diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer, Roundtree remained quiet about his illness. Five years later he revealed his battle with cancer at a celebrity golf tournament to raise money for a mobile breast cancer diagnostic unit.

Hoda Kotb

“Today” show host Hoda Kotb underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive breast surgery in 2007. Her story was documented on the “Today” show and she has since become an advocate for breast cancer awareness.
