Laughing in the Face of Adversity

I am sure that everyone at some point has fell victim to their assumptions.  I can admit that I have plenty of times, and this situation was no different.  As I prepared for my interview with the beautiful Editor-in-Chief of POSE Magazine, Tiffany Jones Keaton, I found myself replaying the things that I already knew about her.   Editor-in-Chief of POSE, finalist on Monique’s F.A.T Chance in 2006 and a proud mother of what has to be the most adorable little boy.  I even knew that at a point in her life she struggled with capturing her feminine side, although she seems to have mastered it now.  Despite all that I learned about Tip Jones, there was double that I didn't know.

Tip Jones, a beautiful, successful and talented woman.  Tip Jones, loving mother, devoted wife and inspiration to all that come in contact with her.  Tip Jones, a woman who has attempted to take her own life nearly 30 times but was save when she heard, “the voice of God.”  Tip Jones, a woman with a testimony that every woman can identify with in some manner.  Tip Jones, a strong, God fearing woman who is making huge deposits into the bank of life.

I don’t know where I heard it but the phrase, “thank God, I don’t look like what I have been through,” continues to come to mind as I replay the conversation with Tip.    When she and I begin talking about her life, she explained that she lived a comfortable childhood and even graduated high school with honors at the age of 16 years old.  However, In the midst of all that Tip found herself depressed, taking an assortment of medication, receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and hospitalized.  As she travels back to her final suicide attempt, Tip recalls hearing God say “get up and that is what she did.”  During her hospital stay for this final attempt, Tip says that she made God a promise; “if you allow me to get off these meds without having withdrawals, I will never take them again.”

And so it was, Tip Jones began to walk towards her destiny.  She stated that she began working security jobs but she “knew that her life wasn’t where it was going to stay.”  She like most of us had dreams and although she didn’t know what to call it, she knew at a very young age that she would one day be an entrepreneur.   After attending her first model call with pumps in hand and Timberlands on her feet, Tip attends the casting for Monique’s F.A.T. Chance with little to no expectations.  However, she ended up living in a mansion with other women from all walks of life.  Tip stated that although she “had no job and only $40 in her pocket,” she said to God, “okay, this is my life.

Now I know that most of you are thinking, wow, great story.  Well it isn’t over.  After laughing in the face of adversity and coming a little closer to her destiny, Tip found herself face to face with death again.  During what is supposed to be one of the happiest times of life, she experiences more hell.  During her pregnancy, Tip became so ill that she “wrote out her will.”   “Once I gave birth, I instantly began to feel better but five days later, I could not walk or hold my son,” Tip stated.  However, once again, Tip laughed in the face of adversity.

Tip began working in the plus size industry under the wing of pioneer Gwen Devoe, at The Plus Academy.  This is also where her other baby, POSE Magazine was conceived.  Since then the magazine has grown into a major publication that has featured the who’s who in plus size industry.  Although Pose is highly respected, that isn’t good enough for Tip Jones; she is ready to take her baby to the next level.

With the expansion of the magazine, working on her memoirs, managing her husband’s career and maintaining her other businesses, Tip is a busy woman.  However, she still makes time to pour into the lives of other women.  Tiffany knows that God took her to those low places in her life so that she could one day save other girls and women.  She identifies with the responsibility that has been placed on her life and she doesn’t take it lightly at all.  Tip uses her life’s truth as a map that guides other women to live their best lives. Many women (including me), see her and think she is too fabulous to know their struggles, but those are just assumptions.  The bold, fierce and fearless woman that stands before us is our sister and like so many of us, womanhood did not greet her with a smile.

Tip Jones is not superwoman.  Nevertheless she is without a doubt; passionate about life, happy with whom she is, appreciative to God for His many blessings and true to herself and others…….. TIP JONES IS P.H.A.T. GIRL FRESH

WELCOME TO HONEYSUCKLE HILL

I received a call from one of my customers on New Year’s Eve asking if I had any knowledge of a new plus size boutique in town (Albany, Georgia), my answer was “nope.”  She and I both were thinking the same thing, surely if there was a new plus size boutique in town I would know.  Wrong!!!!!  Yes, Albany does have a new plus size boutique and its name is Honeysuckle Hill.

After speaking with the owner Amanda Bennett, I decided to take a trip to Honeysuckle Hill.  I must admit, I was very pleased.  The decor was amazing and so were the clothes.  I really applaud Amanda for stepping out of the box because honestly most plus size boutiques have the same inventory.  I tried on three pieces, which were pretty true to size, which is rare with plus size clothing you find in most boutiques.

Overall I give Honeysuckle Hill an A+!!! The clothing, the atmosphere and the owner were all grade A.  For all of you curvy divas in and around Albany, Georgia, who dare to be different and want to add some class to your curves; check out Honeysuckle Hill 2345 Dawson Road suite B.  Like Honeysuckle Hill on Facebook by clicking the following link  www.facebook.com/honeysucklehillboutique  #PHATGIRLFRESH

WELCOME TO THE NEW AGE!

Being the shopaholic that I am, I can honestly say that the name Elocin Plus is not new to me.  However, I didn't know that Elocin Plus was more than just a trendy boutique.  There is an amazingly talented powerhouse behind the name Elocin Plus and her name is Nicole Nolan. Nicole is a talented designer who is passionate about all things fashion and it shows in her work. Nicole is new to Atlanta, but in a short time she has managed to make her presence felt in a major way. MODEL BEHAVIOR..... FEATURING LIRIS CROSSE

Few people start at the top, and Baltimore native Liris Crosse is no exception. This modeling pioneer, dubbed “The “Body” & “The Naomi Campbell of Plus”, certainly came from humble beginnings. When starting out, her statuesque form, cat-like eyes, full lips and caramel complexion got Liris in the door of most model agencies, but her derriere landed her on the shelf. Liris received rejection after rejection due to her voluptuous shape. And even though she chose an east coast giant, Wilhelmina Models, as her mother agency, casting reps were still requesting that she first lose weight and then come back in six months. The industry did not know how to market her powerful curves.  To read the entire article click the link below

Jibri spring collection

Everyone knows that I love fashion.  However,  I haven't been able to say that I was in love with an entire line of clothing, until now.  Jibri's spring collection is to die for!!  It is filled with beautiful colors,  floral patterns and  trendy designs. The entire line is fun, flirty and most of all, curve friendly. You may not be able to say each piece is for your particular body type but some where within this collection there is something that will appeal to your curves.  Some of the pieces were featured on B.E.T's Rip The Runway, and they did just that..... RIPPED IT!!!  I am I love with the green slouch pants, they have to be a part of my wardrobe for Full Figured Fashion Week.  Initially when I saw those pants, I told my boyfriend, "baby, I must have been dead cause these pants just gave me life!!!" However, he was quick to point out that they were expensive and I quickly reminded him about his Jordan collection.  Any way ladies, be sure and take a peep.......... http://www.jibrionline.com/live/

BUILDING A BRAND

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!  DESIGNING, STYLING AND WRITING ALL WITH THE GOAL OF ENCOURAGING AND EMPOWERING OTHERS.  I AM WORKING TOWARDS BUILDING A BRAND BASED ON THE DREAMS AND REALITIES OF MYSELF AND OTHER WOMEN LIKE ME.  THE GOAL IS TO EXHIBIT THE BEAUTY AND STYLE THAT FULL FIGURED WOMEN/GIRLS ARE EQUIP WITH.  TO ENCOURAGE WOMEN NOT TO BE DEFINED BY THERE WEIGHT OR CONFINED TO THE BOX THE SOCIETY PLACES US IN.  TO TRANSFORM THE BASHFUL INTO BOLD AND BUILD CONFIDENCE WHERE SELF ESTEEM IS LOW.  I WANT TO DESIGN AND STYLE THE CLOTHING THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES.  I WANT TO MOTIVATE CURVY DIVAS TO LIVE SO LOUD THAT PEOPLE NEED EARPLUGS TO BE IN OUR PRESENCE.  IF I NEVER SELL ANOTHER ARTICLE OF CLOTHING, OR SEW ANOTHER STITCH, MY SOUL WILL REJOICE IF I HELP OTHERS TO LOVE THEMSELVES.  YES, I WANT TO BUILD A BRAND, I WANT P.H.A.T GIRL FRESH TO BE A PHRASE SPOKE IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD BUT MORE THAN THAT, I WANT TO REBUILD THE PLUS SIZE COMMUNITY...........

P.H.A.T GIRL FRIDAY!!! Introducing Miss Tessenie Mowatt-Mason

What's up you guys, it is officially P.H.A.T GIRL FRIDAY!!! You made it through all the hustle and bustle of the work week and now it is time for a little rest and relaxation.  Don't hesitate to love on yourself a little bit because you deserve it.  Even if you have to work, make time for you.  A little me time goes a long way.

I know that you have seen my numerous post about the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE. We already have a great number of women from different walks of life who are committed to the cause.  My goal is to spotlight different members of the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE every P.H.A.T GIRL FRIDAY, in an effort to introduce them to you and the rest of the world.  This week it brings me great pleasure to present to you, Tessenie Mowatt-Mason.

Tessenie is a 25 year old  aspiring plus size model who was born December 31, 1986 in Jamaica. She attended  Mount Alvernia High School where she graduated and transitioned to Northern Caribbean University where she received a Bachelors in Business Administration.  She moved to Canada one year ago in order to further her education, in post graduate business.  Although Tessenie always wanted to be a model, she says she was told, "you have a pretty face but you are too fat."  Which is a famous insulting phrase that most full figured girls/women are quoted. Tessenie who begin modeling 4 months ago stated,  "I was so excited to learn about plus size modeling and the opportunities that existed."  After all the discouraging words, Tessenie received her big  break in July 2012 when she was chosen to walk for 7 out of 8 designers at the International Fuller Woman Expo. From that point, her career took off.  She was booked for the same show in Detroit (Sept 2012), LS 1426 Fashion Week (Nov 2012) and Curvaceous Styles Gala (local Canadian designer)when speaking about her life as a model, Tessenie humbly states,  "In my very short career, I must say I have been afforded some awesome opportunities which allowed me to network with some very powerful women in plus fashion."  her goal is to continue working hard to make her mark in the lives of women and the fashion industry by being a woman's advocate and a plus size supermodel.

Tessenie is a wonderful young lady and I am looking forward to watching this beautiful flower continue to blossom.  It is so obvious that she is determined not only to be her best but to enrich the lives of others.  When she saw my post about joining the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE, Tessenie immediately contacted me.  She didn't hesitate to comply with what I was asking and for that, I have a lot of love and appreciation for her. Her humble spirit, positive attitude and eagerness to be of service to others is the reason that I asked her to be a member of the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE ADVISORY BOARD. For all of you who question your existence and why God made you the way he did, take notes from this Jamaican beauty; "I truly believe I was blessed with my curves and I want to help women like me wear their curves with confidence. Love and own your body, you only get one shot!"

The Rozay Way

First off, HAPPY P.H.AT GIRL FRIDAY!!!  I hope that you all have a great weekend and are able to get some me time. I have decided to do a little more with P.H.A.T GIRL FRIDAY.  Starting today I will spotlight A member of the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE or plus size divas on the move.  So today, I would like to introduce to some, reintroduce to others and pay respect to............... Ms. Shay Rozay!!!!!

I have only had the pleasure of communicating with Ms. Rozay via social media and one phone conversation.  However, it is obvious that she is one of the most authentic people I have met.  From the moment of our initial contact, she was very warm, straight forward and lighthearted.  I must admit, I never expected a woman/model with her impressive resume to be as down to earth as she was.  She and I talked as if we were old friends, laughing and swapping stories for over an hour.  In spite of her established foundation, Ms. Rozay believes in me and my movement enough to say......"I would love to be apart of the P.H.A.T GIRL CLIQUE!"  She even went on to extend an olive branch to me and allow me to work with her on up and coming projects.  You don't find too many individuals with her star power that are so humble and gracious.  However, one thing is evident; Ms. Rozay is determined to be of service to mankind and she believes in girl power.

Before the glitz and glamor, Ms. Rozay was little Miss Shana Washington.  Born and raised as an only child in Queens, NY to Ms.  Robin Waldron.  Ms. Rozay, has always been a people person and has served as a mentor in several programs in her area and abroad. In 2005 she implemented “The Girl Club”, an informative female only mentoring group that focused on exploring different aspects of the urban teenage experience.  Now as an adult she is the voice of and for thousands of women.  Not just women in her region but all over the world.  She makes an effort to promote happiness, self love and confidence.  Ms. Rozay is a true philanthropist as she is constantly volunteering, donating and fundraising for the greater good of others.  She participated in the PLUS Model Magazine's MS Walk fundraiser and raised $200 as a walker. She worked as a street team leader for the Full Figured Fashion Week distributing advertisements and providing event information to public. In memory of her cousin she created the Jason Jones Scholarship Fund promoting violence prevention by using sports and other entertaining activities as an outlet for our youth. On July 9th,2012,  she hosted her first annual “Stop the Violence- JAY DAY” to raise money for a scholarship fund in her cousins name and honor. She spent the rest of the summer volunteering with Full Blossom Magazine’s Summer Youth Employment Program group “Stepup II Royalty” mentoring, teaching modeling techniques, interviewing skills, etc. She also formed a Full Figured Fly & Fabulous group that walked in the NYC Kidney Walk.

Although modeling was a childhood dream, Ms. Rozay was not driven to pursue it until after the death of her cousin.   In mid-2010 Shay was propositioned to model by Mello Andrews of the plus woman’s internet publication Full Blossom Magazine; she immediately began to explore the world of full figured fashion and hasn't looked back since.  She began her venture with Full Blossom Magazine on July 24, 2010 as a featured model at the grand opening of Johntine’s Plus Size Boutique. She participated in her first official photo shoot a week later.  Ms. Rozay won Full Blossom Magazine’s Cover Model Contest in early-2011 and she was featured on the cover of the 2nd issue.  To date Shay’s cover received  the most views in the magazines history. Quickly gaining popularity she decided to create a Facebook like page, “Shana the plus model”. Her creative energy birthed Full Figured Fly & Fabulous in May of 2011; a women's only Facebook group, she call’s it “A Secret Sisterhood” specifically for sharing inspirational & motivational experiences, stories and quotes. Over 400 females from all over the world participate in sharing self-esteem secrets, fashion tips & much more daily.  In 2012 Shay has been apart of the Sonsi FFFWeek Social Media Team & Street Team while working on a few different projects as the promotions specialist for Full Blossom Magazine and the executive assistant to Sakinah B, the Owner/designer of “curvy” clothing line Eyani Couture.

Armed with beauty, brains, style, class and curvy confidence, Ms. Rozay is truly the epitome of P.H.A.T GIRL FRESH!!! . Despite life's trials, Ms. Rozay has remained because the spirit of a true hustler can never be broken.  Her testimony proves that tragedy can be transformed into triumph and it is never too late to live your dreams. My advise to the world is to remember the face and the name because the world will see much more of Ms. Shay Rozay!!

BEAUTIFUL YOU

It really saddens me that some of the most beautiful people second guess themselves because of others.  Just because others see you differently doesn't make you any less fabulous.  Society is set up to make us feel as though we have to be perfect but no one is.  No one will ever be blessed enough to be excepted fully by everyone.  No matter who you please, in spite of who embraces your talent and beauty, there will be someone who has an issue.  Since this is our reality, why not cut the middle men(women) out and opt to just be happy on your own terms.  Except the reality of your existence and be as fabulous as God intended for you to be.

I know that people see me as this strong, confident, beautiful intelligent woman(well that what I have been told).  However, I have not always been this way.  I went through a period in which I thought I was ugly, fat and unworthy of any thing great.  I felt as though I had no purpose. I literally had to learn to love myself.  I had to come to terms with the reality of my existence.  I had to stand face to face with myself.  I know that sounds easy but it is not.  In no way is it easy to dissect yourself, but that is exactly what I did.  I opened myself up and extracted both the good and the bad and then analyzed it.  Some of the things that I thought were bad were good, and some of the things I thought were good were bad.  Of course the good needed no adjusting but the bad had to be reckoned with.  Why was I  mean?  Why was I a fighter?  Why was I depressed?  Why was I sad? What I came up with was probably the same thing many of you would come up with if you did the same.... It is not you that has made you second guess yourself, it is society.

Society has made us believe so many lies and these lies ultimately tear us down.  You know what I mean..........  if you aren't a size 3 you are fat, and if you are fat you are worthless.  If you don't look a certain way, you are ugly or if you don't have certain material items you are irrelevant. However, as I said before, these are all lies!!!  You don't have to conform to be beautiful, all you have to do is BE.

Stop letting others make you feel like your not whatever it is that you know you are.  If you know that you are a beautiful, intelligent person, be that person.  Be bold about who you are and what you possess.
If you aren't proud, appreciative or in tune with who are, you can't live...... You just exist.  Life is so much happier when you live out loud.  Society my have its standards but when you say to the world; this is me, I make no apologies or excuses for who I am, I love that person that I see in the mirror and I am not going away, the world had two options. The first option is to see you for who you are and love you.  The second is remain ignorant and closed minded and respect you.

So with all of that being said, in spite of your imperfections....... YOU BETTA WERK!!!  Stut as if you are a peacock!! Let the world know, I am here, I am beautiful and I refuse to be denied!!!
